A live news broadcast of a police chase has inadvertently broadcast the fatal shooting of a suspect after he appeared to point a weapon at officers.
Los Angeles station KTLA broadcast the shooting on Monday afternoon during a foot chase in Long Beach, California, where officers with the South Gate Police Department were chasing a male and a female suspect.
News choppers were following a police pursuit of a white van with red rims, which was believed to be stolen.
The van screeched to a stop in the rear of a Target shopping center, and a male and female hopped out and began to run.
The female threw several bags down into the dirt and the two began to flee through a wooded area.
Some minutes later the pair were spotted fleeing down a railroad track near East Artesia Boulevard and Cherry Avenue.
The male suspect can be seen digging around inside a bag and pulling out a black glove, which he puts on his right hand.
Then he reaches back inside the bag and pulls out what appears to be a handgun, pointing it at police.
The male suspect collapses on his hands and knees, and then gets back up and runs several feet away from the officers before collapsing again.
The suspect was struck by gunfire and died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which was called in to assist following the shooting.
The KTLA aerial news crew zoomed out after it became apparent gunshots had been fired, and quickly cut away from the live scene.
Police said no officers were injured in the incident.
The male suspect, whose identity has yet to be announced by police, was declared dead at the scene.
A news chopper with ABC7 was also following the chase, but the channel is not believed to have been broadcasting the footage live at the time of the shooting.
The female suspect continued fleeing on foot and barricaded herself inside a nearby building.
A standoff with the female suspect lasted several hours until she eventually surrendered peacefully.
