Video has captured the moment cars had to swerve out of the way of an elderly woman who drove almost 50 kilometres on the wrong side of a busy freeway.
The 70-year-old woman was filmed driving towards oncoming cars on Adelaide's South Eastern Freeway about 2.30pm on Sunday.
In the video, cars travelling about 100km/h narrowly avoid the woman as she obliviously continues to drive on the wrong side of the road.
At one point the woman can be seen pulling over and climbing out of the Toyota sedan on the passenger's side.
She had driven at least 45 kilometres before sideswiping an oncoming car, The Advertiser reported.
One motorist reported seeing an ambulance chasing after the car in an attempt to get the elderly woman to pull over.
'She came up and had an ambulance behind her,' Carla, who was travelling in a car with husband Randall, said.
'[Randall] was driving and swerved just in time to the left lane to miss her.
'She came so close to hitting us, if one of the two cars in front or behind us in the left lane hadn’t been as close we would have hit them.'
Carla said the woman ignored beeping for her to stop, which prompted her to call 000.
The elderly woman was taken to hospital as a precaution after sideswiping a ute.
Police are investigating the incident.
