Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) compared President Trump’s and his supporters’ attacks on the “fake news” media to attacks that the Nazis carried out against the press during a House Committee on the Judiciary hearing on Monday.
“Now we see the statistic that Gallup says just 27 pecrect of American public expresses strong confidence in newspapers including 46 percent of Democrats and 13 percent of Republicans, and you can track that, you can track that to attacks on the press by people like President Trump and by others,” Nadler remarked. “In recent years, I think especially the conservative media have tried to disparage the press and they’ve had some success.”
“The precedent now, where the President of the United States keeps talking about the lying press, the fake news and everything’s fake news” Nadler continued. “You look back at the Nazis who talked about the lügenpresse, the lying press, to destroy the faith in any information other than from President Trump or his apologists.”
The hearing was supposed to tackle the issue of the state of press freedom in 21st century America.
