WEST BRIDGEWATER – The Bridgewater man charged with robbing the West Bridgewater Corner Market convenience store was known to the employees, store owner Jim Johnson said.
Edward Burgos, 33, of 100 Seatower Dr. in Bridgewater, was charged with armed and masked robbery and three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon after allegedly robbing the Corner Market with an object in the shape of a gun concealed beneath his sleeve.
Last summer, however, Burgos spent several afternoons at the shop when Johnson hired him to paint the building.
“He was here for a few day,” Johnson said. “He seemed nice enough.”
Surveillance video from Thursday afternoon shows the suspect, Edward Burgos of Bridgewater, entering the store undisguised shortly before the hold-up and asking for Johnson.
“The whole thing was awkward,” Johnson said. “Because the kid came in yesterday 15 minutes before [the robbery] with no disguise on. He comes in and he says, ‘Is Jim around?’”
Johnson was not working at the time but he said he had anticipated an similar eventual incident and had trained his employees well on how to respond.
“I’ve been here for 14 years and there’s a store less than a mile down the street– they’ve been robbed five times since I’ve been her,” Johnson said. “So I always knew there was a possibility it would happen.”
