ELYRIA, Ohio -- A 44-year-old man bit off part of a State Highway Patrol trooper's ear during a scuffle along a Lorain County highway, court records say.
Cornelius Carey Jr. faces a felonious assault charge in the incident that happened at 7:15 a.m. on Diagonal Road just north of Biggs Road, Highway Patrol said.
Prosecutors requested that Carey undergo tests for communicable diseases, Elyria Municipal Court records say. Carey was ordered Thursday to be taken to a medical facility for a full blood screening.
Elyria Municipal Court Judge Gary Bennett is expected to review the results of the test which will remain sealed from the public due to privacy laws.
Carey is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. Jan. 22
A woman called the Lorain County Sheriff's Office about 6:45 a.m. and said Carey appeared drunk and was walking in the road, according to a 911 call. She told a dispatcher she was afraid he would get hit by a car.
The trooper, identified as Lance Deshuk, found Carey about 7:15 a.m. Carey got confrontational and struck Deshuk in the face.
Another woman called the Sheriff's Office and said she witnessed Carey and Deshuk wrestling in the middle of the road.
Additional officers arrived several minutes later to help the trooper.
