An incredible ancient ritual site containing human remains from a thousand years ago has been discovered in an underwater cave system.
Divers also found a possible breakthrough link between the Mayan culture and prehistoric society in the Sac Actun cave system on the Yucatan Peninsula in Quintana Roo state, Mexico.
Incredible underwater footage shows these newly uncovered links to the ancient past - including a cracked human skull - in the recently discovered caves.
Fossils of giant sloths, extinct bears and masks of the Mayan god of commerce are some of the objects uncovered there.
Altars, walls and the Mayan burial site with human remains are some of the most important finds.
Of the 198 objects uncovered, 138 are believed to be from the postclassic Mayan period (900-1200 AD), and the 60 remaining objects seem to be from Preceramic era (10,000-4,000 BC).
