A relic galaxy is a rare and mysterious assemblage of stars, that has remained unchanged for the past 10 billion years.
The discovery could provide key insights into the origin and evolution of galaxies billions of years ago.
The galaxy, which NASA has named NGC 1277, churned out stars 1,000 times faster than seen in our own Milky Way, shortly after it formed.
But it quickly became inactive, as the stars aged and grew red.
