MSNBC’s Chris Matthews seemed to defend President Trump calling Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) “Pocahontas,” telling Politico’s “Off Message” that Trump wasn’t knocking Native Americans, but Warren for claiming she was one.
“If Elizabeth Warren is the nominee, we’ll hear Pocahontas one million times,” Matthews said. “It was funny the first time, it wasn’t so funny the second and ten-thousandth time.”
Matthews said that Trump’s joke works with Americans because it comes from this “weird kind of New York ethnic humor that Trump knows.”
“I shouldn’t be saying it’s good because it’s not good,” Matthews said. “It wasn’t knocking Indians, it was knocking her for claiming to be Indian.”
Politico‘s Edward-Isaac Dovere asked Matthews whether it was a racist joke or not. “He wasn’t knocking Indians or Native Americans, he was knocking her for claiming to be one,” Matthews said.
