A woman who was smashed in the head with a kettle, before being stabbed in the neck with scissors and strangled, lay in the lobby of her block of flats covered in blood.
The stab wound to the side of her neck was only an inch from her main artery, and came as she and her partner were high on drugs.
Mark Cutmore went for his victim, named only as Michelle, in the home they shared.
He was arrested days later, as the police had a film crew from Channel 4 documentary series 24 Hours in Police Custody with them.
Cutmore's time in custody was shown last night as the episode aired with the title, Second Chance.
