Former FBI Director James Comey doubted that Democrats have the “wisdom” to defeat President Trump in the 2020 election, at an event in Germany on Tuesday. The fired official imagined several scenarios where the Democrats would move so far to the left that they would throw the election to Trump.
An audience member asked Comey if he would run for office, and if Trump will win re-election in 2020.
The former director said that he will not run for office, but he could imagine several possibilities where the president wins another four years in the White House.
“There’s a scenario, and maybe this is what he’s counting on, where he gets elected with 34 percent of the vote,” he said. “The Democrats choose someone who’s far left and that then prompts an independent to run.”
Comey added that the next Democratic candidate could also be so far left that it pushes the middle to stay home or vote Trump, but he hoped that they will pick someone who could restore what he believes in government.
“I don’t know whether the Democratic Party will have the wisdom to do that or not,” the former FBI official added.
If they do, he predicted, they will win in a “landslide” against the president.
