A mayor south of Metro Manila known for his anti-crime crusade was shot dead on Monday as he presided over the city's flag ceremony.
Tanauan, Batangas Mayor Antonio Halili was shot in the chest just as city hall employees began singing the national anthem.
Chief Superintendent Edward Carranza, Calabarzon police chief, said the bullet hit Halili's cellphone first before it went through his right chest.
He said the unidentified gunman was in an elevated area and 100 meters away from the city hall.
