A senior member of Emmanuel Macron's staff has been caught out impersonating a riot cop in order to beat up anti-government protesters.
Astonishing video shot during a street demonstration in Paris shows security advisor Alexandra Benalla attacking a young man he slaps round the head and woman who he grabs by the neck.
The fallout which has emerged since the video became public has led to a political scandal - with opponents of French president accusing him of trying to cover up the attacks.
There are now calls for deputy chief of staff Benalla, who is in his mid-30s, to be imprisoned after what happened at the demonstration on May 1 – the country's traditional day of street action.
The event this year saw hundreds of thousands campaigning across France against Mr Macron’s employment reforms - and it's now transpired Benalla was in the thick of it.
