Horrific video evidence shows torture by prison officers in a Russian penal colony, say human rights lawyers.
The footage has now led to a formal criminal investigation.
Naked inmate Evgeny Makarov is pinned to a table and appears to be naked from the waist down as he is viciously attacked by up to 10 prison warders.
With his arms held and lying flat in the crucifix position, he is stuck on the face and hit on his calves and heels with rubber batons and fists.
“The man is moaning, screaming and begging to stop,” reported investigative newspaper Novaya Gazeta, which revealed the appalling violence.
