Hurricane Florence: Incredible moment plane flies through the eye of the storm

A hurricane hunter took to the sky and flew straight through the eye of the catastrophic storm threatening to devastate parts of the eastern US.



The small aircraft was captured dipping in and out of dense clouds before emerging in the centre of the storm that has forced more than one million people to evacuate their homes.



The time-lapse footage showed the plane surrounded by a ring of the gray clouds, then breaking through into a still centre with bright blue skies.



Nick Underwood, the government 'hurricane hunter' took to Twitter to share the incredible footage with the caption: "This is probably the coolest thing I've filmed."



His mission was gruelling, each hurricane-investigating flight typically takes around 8-12 hours and to reach the storm's eye the aircraft must first break through heavy rain and winds.



The researchers on board drop cylindrical GPS instruments called dropwindsondes, which drift through the hurricane in the plane's wake.
