A vicious punch-up erupted on a late night train between Leeds and Hull and was caught in shocking CCTV footage.
In court, a barrister described the attack as "a situation that would evoke genuine fear in most people".
It began with punches being hurled and ended with a man stamping on another on the floor, Hull Live reports.
Three friends - Jacob West, Luke Lyons, and Max Pearson - were returning from a university reunion in Leeds when they were attacked by two men shortly before they were due to get off in Brough.
The assault was led by Dale Williams, who came into the carriage and began throwing punches at the face and head of Pearson, who began trying to defend himself, aided by Mr Lyons.
Williams's accomplice Peter Griffin quickly joined the "vicious" brawl by headbutting Mr West, who had been standing with his hands in his pockets.
