The final battle against the Islamic State in eastern Syria has left a sorry trail of destruction across the region, with whole communities devastated and rows of buildings flattened, as the full extent of war leaves a bleak sight in its wake.
The terrible cost of war is highly evident when driving through the town of Ash Sha'fah, the last stop before Baghouz, which remains the final area under Islamic State control in the heartlands of the territory it seized back in 2014.
The sheer devastation left by this chaos is staggering, with almost every house pummeled by heavy artillery after nearly three months of fierce fighting by the U.S.-backed Kurdish forces in their attempts to drive the final remnants of Islamic State out of eastern Syria.
