A Cathedral City police officer fatally shot a man who opened fire after killing a woman in a shopping center parking lot Sunday afternoon, investigators said.
The woman has been identified as Paola Minero, 23, of Desert Hot Springs. And, the man, who was shot and killed by police, was Roberto Tapia, 28, of La Quinta, according to the Riverside County coroner's office.
According to published reports, Tapia and Minero were the parents of three children and had been estranged.
The shootings occurred about 4:45 p.m. near Big 5 Sporting Goods at Date Palm Drive and McCallum Way, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the case.
Roberto Tapia was apparently in the US illegally thanks to Riverside's sanctuary policy.
