A man and woman from Kelowna, Canada are both in custody following an incident involving a group of Kelowna Secondary Students on Tuesday.
Around noon, the students were spending their lunch break near Gulley Road in East Kelowna when they were approached and allegedly assaulted by the pair.
One of the students told KelownaNow the suspects used mace on the student during the altercation.
Following the alleged assault, the suspects rammed their grey Acura SUV into one of the teen’s red SUV, which had multiple people inside.
The ramming was caught on video and the occupants of the red vehicle suffered minor injuries.
Police responded to the area and attempted to stop the suspect’s vehicle, but they wouldn’t comply with those demands and fled the scene.
However, the Kelowna RCMP, with the assistance of police dogs and air services, located the vehicle near Hwy 33 and McCulloch Road later in the day.
“A tire deflation device, deployed by frontline officers effectively disabled the suspect vehicle on a rural forestry road and the occupants fled on foot,” states Cst. Solana Paré.
“The man and woman, who according to the arresting officers were grateful to see police after taking an unplanned trek through the snow, were taken into custody without further incident.”
Police determined that the grey Acura SUV had been stolen from the Kelowna area two weeks earlier and contained stolen property that had been taken from a delivery vehicle earlier in the day.
The 29-year-old man and 36-year-old woman remain in custody and face a number of potential criminal charges.
