More than 150 members of Louisville’s Cuban community snaked through the city Saturday in a caravan of U.S. and Cuban flag-draped cars, calling for an end to Cuba’s socialist government.
With horns blaring and Cuban music blasting, the rally came in the wake of presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders’ praise for Cuba’s high literacy rate. Critics said it lacked context, partly because Cubans aren’t free to read and write what they want.
Sanders’ image as embracing socialist ideas and his campaign success have kindled some Cubans’ fears of socialism. At the same time, President Donald Trump’s policies have made it harder for Cubans to migrate to the U.S. and hurt the Cuban economy.
