KABUL, Afghanistan - A pair of suicide bombers and gunmen outside the Kabul airport in Afghanistan killed at least 13 people, including 10 U.S. Marines and soldiers, and wounded another 15 in an attack believed to have been carried out by the Islamic State group.
At least three other U.S. troops were reportedly among those hurt.
Western nations had warned earlier in the day of a possible attack at the airport in the waning days of a massive airlift. A U.S. official said the complex attack was believed to have been carried out by the Islamic State group. The IS affiliate in Afghanistan is far more radical than the Taliban, who recently took control of the country in a lightning blitz and condemned the attack, according to the Associated Press.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry gave the first official casualty count, saying 13 people had died and 15 were wounded. U.S. officials confirmed the Marines’ deaths and injuries to FOX News.
