In the historic Beyazit Market in Istanbul’s old city, clashes between Turkish police and gunmen occurred, hurting one police officer and wounding six others.
According to Turkish media, a number of Turkish police officers intervened to resolve a quarrel between two groups of traders in central Istanbul’s historic Beyazit Market, which escalated into a firefight.
As the shooting erupted, videos of the incident showed an officer and a citizen attempting to assist an injured police officer.
Seven individuals were injured in the gunfight, including a police officer, and 27 people were arrested in connection with the incident.
An ambulance was dispatched to transport the injured to the hospital.
As a precaution, heavy security forces moved to a location and arrested 27 people in connection with the event, as well as closing all routes going to the market.
An argument between two groups with a previous rivalry turned into an armed fight, according to a written statement from the Istanbul governor’s office: “One of the police officers who intervened in the incident was injured, while five other people involved in the incident, as well as one of the citizens who was nearby, were injured.”
“Our security personnel detained 27 people involved in the incident and collected two firearms,” the statement stated. “The wounded were transferred to local hospitals by the emergency response team.”
