This was the insane scene down in Chicago's West Loop on Saturday night as another illegal sideshow spiraled out of control.
Chicago police tried to break up the scene after one of the drivers sped towards police officers, nearly hitting them.
Police cruisers drove in to break up the crowds and were met with bottles and rocks being thrown at them.
Felony charges have been filed against a man who allegedly drove his vehicle toward a Chicago police officer during a “sideshow” caravan downtown on Saturday.
Omar Daaboul, 19, was already on first-time gun offender probation when he encountered officers in the 500 block of South Clinton around 3:10 a.m.
Cops were in the area handling calls of drag racing and other dangerous driving when they saw Daaboul standing next to a car they believed was involved in the incident, prosecutor Sahin Jutla said.
According to a CPD media statement, cops saw Daaboul’s car doing donuts in the intersection of Columbus and Upper Wacker Drive before approaching him in the West Loop.
Daaboul got into his car as officers approached, and a CPD sergeant stood in front of it. But Daaboul allegedly put his car into reverse, striking a parked car, then drove forward toward the sergeant. He hit the brakes before hitting the officer, Jutla said.
Judge Charles Beach, who was handling Daaboul’s bail hearing on Sunday afternoon, noted that the CPD arrest report said the sergeant had to jump out of the way of Daaboul’s car. Daaboul also refused to get out of the vehicle, and police had to break his window to take him into custody, according to the report.
CPD records show Daaboul was charged in February with felony unlawful use of a weapon. He received first-time gun offender probation in that matter, Jutla said.
