A man was shot by Placentia police and later died at a hospital after he fired on officers who were attempting to speak with him behind a business Saturday morning, May 29, authorities said.
Officers saw a suspicious vehicle parked behind a closed, vacant business in the 800 block of North Rose Drive, the northern portion of the Village Center at Rose shopping center, about 1:10 a.m., Placentia Police Lt. Chris Anderson said.
But as officers attempted to contact the man, he fired at the officers, hitting the windshield of a patrol vehicle, Anderson said. At least one officer returned fire and hit the suspect.
Officers began life-saving measures until paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital, Anderson said.
No officers were injured in the exchange, and a loaded handgun was found, he said.
It wasn’t immediately known if the suspect stepped out of the vehicle before firing at the officers, or how many officers fired back. The suspect was the only person inside the vehicle, Anderson said.
The officers’ body-worn cameras were activated at the time of the shooting and the video was sent to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office for investigation, Anderson said.
Placentia police were also conducting an internal investigation.
Further information about the suspect, why he was parked behind the business, or what led him to fire was not immediately available.
