The Oklahoma City Police Department (OKCPD) released body-worn camera and dash-cam video of the arrest of 26-year-old Isiah Mitchell, who later took his own life in the Oklahoma County Detention Center.
Mitchell was initially stopped by officers for riding his bike on the wrong side of the road on Jan. 27.
In the body-cam footage, Mitchell can be heard telling the officer he wasn't aware that he was supposed to follow the laws of traffic while riding a bicycle, and thought the correct way was to ride against traffic.
The arresting officer ran a check on Mitchell and determined he had an outstanding warrant for driving while intoxicated out of Garfield County in 2016. The warrant was issued due to Mitchell not showing up to court.
Mitchell was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center without incident after Garfield County confirmed they wanted him extradited to their county.
Three days after being booked, Mitchell attempted suicide in his cell. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
The Oklahoma Medical Examiner's office is working on determining what exactly caused his death.
Mitchell is the first inmate to die in the Oklahoma County Detention Center in 2023. In 2022, there were 16 deaths inside the facility.
