The Alliance Police Department has released new details regarding a deadly shooting in which a man was killed by an officer Sunday afternoon.
Police say they received a 911 call around 1:39 p.m. that “a male was holding a knife to the throat of a female in an apartment” in the 800 block of South Linden Avenue.
Multiple officers responded to the scene, where they “observed the male with the knife still held to the female’s throat.”
The man then allegedly retreated into the apartment and locked the door.
“Officers breached the door, and the male retreated into a bedroom and locked the door while using the female as a shield,” according to police. “Officers also breached this door and observed the male with the knife to the female’s throat.”
Police say the man refused to drop the knife after multiple commands from officers. One officer fired two rounds and struck the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man, who has been identified as 59-year-old George Appleby, was a resident of the apartment, according to police.
The female was taken to the hospital by an ambulance, where police say she was treated for cuts to her throat. She has since been released.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation also responded to the scene and is conducting the investigation.
A BCI spokesperson sent the following statement to 3News on Sunday:
