On August 4th, 2023, officers in New Mexico received a report of a shoplifter at Dollar General. Store staff told officers they had noticed a woman wearing a black tank or crop top shoplifting inside the store.
The woman became belligerent with staff when asked to leave before leaving the store with the items on foot. Officers located the woman nearby based on the description and recognized her previous incidents.
The suspect became upset and angry with the officers for stopping her. Despite attempts by officers to discuss what had happened, the suspect became increasingly uncooperative. As an officer began reading her Miranda Rights, the suspect began yelling and screaming, stating she could go back and pay for the items and that the clerk had asked her to leave before she could pay. During the interaction, the suspect, who was visibly upset, refused to comply with officers' instructions and attempted to evade them. In the process, she revealed additional stolen items hidden on her person. The officers placed the suspect under arrest despite her physical resistance, which included kicking one of the officers. The suspect was charged with Battery Upon A Peace Officer, Resisting, Evading, or Obstructing an Officer, and Shoplifting $250 or Less. The store decided not to press additional charges but issued a Criminal Trespass Warning to the suspect, effectively barring her from returning to the premises.
The screeching has surpassed the decibel rating.
