A British man who died in severe turbulence on a flight from London to Singapore has been named as Geoffrey Ralph Kitchen, 73.
Police confirmed that Kitchen died after suffering a heart attack in severe turbulence that also left his wife and scores of others injured as the plane plummeted 6,000ft in less than three minutes.
The Singapore Airlines flight diverted to Bangkok following the turbulence, with the injured passengers being given medical assistance on the ground.
"Seventy-one people needed treatment and six of them had critical injuries," Bangkok's Smitivej Srinakarin Hospital told Sky News.
However, Singapore Airlines said just 30 people had been injured.
It is thought the flight fell into an air pocket while cabin crew was serving breakfast before it encountered turbulence, prompting the pilots to request an emergency landing
The airline said: "Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. We deeply apologise for the traumatic experience that our passengers and crew members suffered on this flight."
