First responders are praising a Good Samaritan who jumped into action to rescue a woman in the Maumee River.
It happened near the Martin Luther King bridge in downtown Toledo around 2:00 a.m. on July 31. A new video released Aug. 8 shows the moment the Good Samaritan jumped into the water to help. Toledo Police called it an example of Toledoans making a difference every day.
Toledo Police records say a 34-year-old woman jumped off the MLK bridge. Justin Slater, 38, was fishing with friends nearby when he heard a splash and someone calling for help. He then called 911.
Dispatchers told Slater not to jump into the river out of concern she might take him underwater, but he jumped in any way and pulled her to the river bank, where TFRD divers were able to help get everyone out.
The woman was taken to an area hospital to get checked out. Her condition is unknown at this time.
“Some say they wouldn’t do it, but if you see somebody swimming for their life, who wouldn’t jump in and try? I think any human would,” Slater said.
