Brooklyn Park Police Department has released bodycam footage from the officer who shot a man shortly after the death of his baby in June.
Police responded to a 7-month-old baby not breathing on June 23 at 3:51 a.m. Officers attempted life-saving first aid. However, the baby did not survive.
Body camera footage shows that around 40 minutes later, the father of the dead baby – 24-year-old Oronde Neal Reese – walked into the home during the investigation and locked himself in a bedroom where a gun was stored.
A family member alerted officers and tried to open the door and stop him from harming himself. As several officers entered the bedroom, a fight broke out as they tried to take the gun away from Reese, who had been rummaging in the closet and had allegedly loaded the gun.
During the fast-escalating struggle captured on bodycam, Officer Momodou Dibba opened fire, striking Reese, who was wounded but survived the shooting after lifesaving measures were applied at the scene.
Brooklyn Park PD says that Dibba has been cleared of wrongdoing in its own internal investigation and returned to active duty as of Aug. 22. However, the incident remains under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), which will forward its findings to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office meanwhile continues to investigate the death of the baby.
