The Redding Police Department (RPD) has addressed "inaccurate information being spread on social media" regarding a traffic stop that led to an arrest on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024.
In the video that RPD shared, they explained that on Sept. 12, 38-year-old Fredrick "Rick" Phillips of Redding was stopped for speeding on Bechelli Lane in Redding. RPD says that Phillips refused to identify himself and was therefore placed under arrest. RPD explained how Phillips then became combative, refusing to follow the officer's orders. A struggle between the arresting officer and Phillips began, and RPD says that Phillips made several attempts to put his vehicle into drive during the altercation.
Two citizens stepped in to assist the officer, and Phillips was then taken into police custody. RPD said that before being booked into the Shasta County Jail, Phillips was transported to a local hospital where he was cleared by a medical doctor.
The allegations that spread online alleged that Phillips had been struck 10 times by the officer. RPD said the body cam footage shows that these allegations are inaccurate.
