21-year-old man was fatally shot by police after attacking an officer with a machete during an undercover operation.
The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Shahaud Richmond from Gary, Ind.
Gary police were investigating a surge in robberies connected to social media marketplace sales.
Richmond was narrowed down as a suspect in the investigation.
"During that operation, the suspect attempted to rob our undercover officer and attacked him with a machete style weapon," Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon said.
Other officers on the scene shot Richmond, and he later died at a nearby hospital.
The officer involved in the shooting was injured but is in stable condition. The officer will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
