Uber-Rare Purple Sapphire Found In Sri Lanka Worth Up To $400 Million!
That’s exactly what happened with a rare purple star sapphire recently identified in Sri Lanka. The gemstone weighs an incredible 3,563 carats and could be worth up to $400 million, according to experts.
The owners say the sapphire was found in a gem pit near the town of Rathnapura, an area known around the world for its gemstone industry. It was purchased in 2023, along with several other stones, without anyone realizing just how special it was.
It wasn’t until two years later that the buyers took a closer look and recognized the gem’s significance.
Gemologist Ashan Amarasinghe explained why this stone stands out.
“This is the largest purple star sapphire of its kind,” Amarasinghe said. “The gem shows a well-defined asterism. It has six rays asterism. That’s something special compared to other stones.”
In simple terms, the sapphire displays a clear, star-shaped pattern when light hits its surface—a rare effect caused by the stone’s internal structure. While star sapphires do exist, finding one this large, this purple, and with such a defined pattern is extremely uncommon.
The gemstone’s future hasn’t been decided yet. It could be sold, placed in a private collection, or displayed publicly. Whatever happens next, experts agree it’s a remarkable find.
