An Illinois man says he watched helplessly as his wife was murdered by her ex-husband after the man broke into their home, with the entire attack unfolding on the couple’s security cameras.
Ashley Stewart, 41, was found inside her home with multiple stab wounds after police responded to the scene. Her husband, Adam Stewart, told authorities that he saw the attack happen in real time through their home surveillance system.
According to Adam Stewart, the footage showed Ashley’s ex husband, Ryan Dodd, 44, forcing his way into the house and chasing her into the garage. Police arrived shortly afterward and pronounced Ashley dead at the scene.
Dodd fled but was arrested roughly 30 minutes later, authorities said.
The case has stunned the local community and highlights the ongoing danger posed by violent former partners, even after relationships have ended and victims have moved on. For Adam Stewart, the tragedy is compounded by the fact that he witnessed his wife’s final moments through a camera meant to keep their home safe.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and additional details will be released as the case proceeds.
