The Black Community Outraged At Disney's New, Stereotypical Superhero, Captain Durag, During Black History Month, Disney Pulls The Cartoon
26 days ago
Disney is facing mounting criticism from members of the Black community after the company quietly debuted and then removed a children’s character many viewers described as offensive and tone deaf.
The controversy centers on a new superhero called Captain Durag, a character created for programming associated with Disney and its children’s brand Disney Jr. The character was depicted flying through the air with a durag pulled up over his face like a mask, a design choice that quickly sparked backlash online.
Critics argued the character leaned into harmful stereotypes and was especially inappropriate given the timing of its release during Black History Month. Several Black commentators and social media users said the imagery felt dismissive and disrespectful, accusing Disney of trivializing Black culture rather than honoring it.
As the backlash grew, Disney appeared to quietly retreat. The company removed the original promotional video along with multiple other Captain Durag clips from its official YouTube channel. However, footage of the character’s theme song has since resurfaced after being recovered and shared independently online.
Disney has not issued a formal public statement addressing the character or the criticism, and it remains unclear whether Captain Durag was intended to be a recurring figure or part of a broader project.
There is also no confirmation that the character has any future within Disney’s larger superhero universe. Despite online speculation, there has been no indication that Captain Durag will appear in Avengers Doomsday or any other Marvel related production.
The episode adds to ongoing scrutiny of Disney’s creative decisions and cultural messaging as the company continues to navigate criticism from multiple political and cultural directions. For now, Captain Durag appears to have been shelved, leaving unanswered questions about how the character made it through development and why it was pulled so abruptly once the public responded.
