A routine football match took an extraordinary turn when a player’s shot accidentally struck a seagull, leaving the bird unconscious on the pitch.
Uyanik, the player involved, initially had no idea what had happened. It was only upon approaching the fallen white object that he realised he was staring at a living creature. Shocked and deeply upset, he watched as the bird struggled for life.
Team captain Gani Catan was the first to rush over, immediately recognising the bird as a seagull. With no time to waste, Catan began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, better known as chest compressions. Remarkably, after around two minutes of effort, the bird’s legs and eyes began to move, signalling a return of consciousness.
The seagull was given water and carefully carried to the sidelines, where it was handed over to the medical staff present at the match. It was later discovered that the bird had sustained wing injuries from the impact, preventing it from flying for the time being, though it was reportedly walking again.
Catan, who had no formal first-aid training, described his intervention as a reflexive response, an instinct to save the creature in its moment of need.
The dramatic rescue captured the attention of the live broadcast, with presenter Onur Ozsoy describing the scene as unprecedented on a football pitch. Viewers were left captivated as the normally raucous stadium fell silent, watching a player fight to save a tiny life mid-game.
Uyanik admitted he did not know where the bird was being treated but said he would consider visiting if he could discover its location. Meanwhile, social media erupted with concern and praise for the footballers’ quick thinking, with many dubbing the incident a “miracle on the pitch.”
The extraordinary episode is a reminder that sometimes the most unexpected moments on the football field are the ones that stay with us the longest.
