An intense near-death drama unfolded on the slopes of Palisades Tahoe after two skiers made a split-second decision that saved a man’s life.
The pair were skiing through deep powder in near whiteout conditions when they suddenly stopped, only to notice something chilling: the tips of a ski sticking out of the snow.
Beneath it was a man who had become trapped and was slowly suffocating after being buried under heavy snowfall.
Had they skied just a few feet farther, the outcome could have been fatal.
“For whatever reason we stopped and happen to just see the tips of the skis in the whiteout, and luckily we did,” rescuer Carson Schmidt said afterward.
The skiers quickly dug the man out, freeing him before the lack of oxygen could turn deadly.
Schmidt later urged fellow winter sports enthusiasts to take the incident as a sobering warning.
“I just want it to be a reminder to ski safe and ski with a buddy,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be an avalanche or a tree well to get buried when it’s that deep.”
The dramatic rescue has been hailed as nothing short of miraculous, highlighting both the hidden dangers of extreme powder conditions and the importance of skiing with others nearby.
