A Massachusetts teenager invited by Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton to attend President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address earlier this year is named in two police reports from 2021 that involve sexual assault and juveniles, according to a new report from the Boston Herald.
Marcelo Gomes da Silva, 19, who entered the U.S. from Brazil as a child and overstayed a visa, accompanied Moulton to the Feb. 24 speech as a symbol of immigration policy concerns. During the address, the Department of Homeland Security posted on X that Gomes da Silva was “an illegal alien who has no right to be in our nation,” prompting Moulton’s staff to escort him from the House chamber to the congressman’s office out of caution.
The Boston Herald obtained details through public records requests to the Milford Police Department and the Secretary of State’s Office. Police denied release of the full reports, citing their sensitive content.
One report, dated June 30, 2021 (No. 21-16254-OF), “involves a sexual assault and juveniles,” according to Milford Deputy Chief John Sanchioni. A second report from Sept. 15, 2021 (No. 21-23101-OF), “involves juveniles.” Gomes da Silva was named as the person of interest in both incidents, per the Herald’s reporting. At the time of the reports, Gomes da Silva would have been around 14 or 15 years old. No charges or further public details have emerged, and the department withheld the documents due to the involvement of minors.
Gomes da Silva gained national attention in May 2025 when ICE detained him en route to a high school volleyball practice in Milford, Massachusetts. Authorities said they were targeting his father but arrested the teen because his student visa had expired. He was held for several days before release on bond and has since applied for asylum.
Moulton, a Massachusetts Democrat, has highlighted Gomes da Silva’s story to criticize immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. The congressman praised the teen’s “courage” in attending the SOTU despite the risks. The Massachusetts GOP and critics have seized on the new revelations to question Moulton’s decision to spotlight Gomes da Silva amid the unresolved police reports.
Neither Moulton’s office nor the Milford Police Department immediately responded to requests for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation. The full context of the 2021 incidents remains sealed, leaving questions about their nature and any resolutions. The story underscores ongoing tensions over immigration policy, with Democrats emphasizing humanitarian concerns and Republicans pointing to enforcement and potential security risks.
