A breathtaking new mural in California is leaving drivers stunned, as a massive painted scene appears to spring to life, but only under very specific conditions.
The extraordinary artwork, titled “Liberation,” was created by Mexican artist Hervey Garcia and stretches an astonishing 600 feet along an overpass in Indio.
At first glance, the mural appears to be a series of repeated images, but when viewed from a moving vehicle at around 65mph, something remarkable happens.
The figures begin to animate.
A horse appears to gallop, stretch forward, and then seamlessly transform into a flock of birds taking flight, creating a fluid, almost cinematic illusion that has captivated onlookers.
The installation sits along Fred Waring Drive and was completed in October 2025, with support from the city, turning an ordinary stretch of infrastructure into an interactive visual experience.
Garcia achieved the effect using more than 500 carefully arranged stencil frames, designed to work in sequence as the viewer passes by at speed.
The technique mirrors early animation devices such as the zoetrope, which relied on rapid motion to blend still images into continuous movement.
Instead of spinning a drum, however, this modern interpretation uses passing traffic to create the illusion, meaning the artwork only fully reveals itself to those in motion.
The result is a striking fusion of art and engineering, transforming a routine commute into something far more memorable.
