There are bad drivers, there are angry drivers, and then there’s whatever the hell is going on in this video out of Newport Beach, because this is next-level unhinged.
Two competitive cyclists are just out here doing what cyclists do, grinding a training ride along Pacific Coast Highway, single file, in the bike lane, literally exactly where they’re supposed to be, and somehow it turns into a scene straight out of a video game.
Out of nowhere, a blue BMW rolls up behind them and decides today is the day to become a full-blown menace. The car speeds up, locks onto their back wheels, and gets within inches of them while they’re still in the bike lane. Not drifting over by accident, not a “whoops didn’t see you,” this is deliberate, tight, aggressive driving that has zero business happening around people on bikes.
At one point, one of the cyclists has to straight up bunny hop onto the sidewalk to avoid getting clipped. Imagine being mid-training ride and suddenly you’re forced into evasive maneuvers like you’re in the X Games just to not get flattened.
And just when you think it’s over, nope, the driver circles back like a villain in a movie who forgot one last line. Comes back AGAIN.
Because apparently one near-hit wasn’t enough.
Then it somehow gets worse, because a second car, a Corvette, joins the party. Now it’s not just one lunatic, it’s a duo. Slurs start getting shouted out the windows, a water bottle gets launched directly at the cyclists, and both cars eventually stop with people reportedly getting out like they’re about to turn a training ride into a roadside showdown.
All of this, again, is directed at two guys riding single file in a bike lane.
The cyclists say the part we don’t fully see on video might be even crazier, claiming the drivers tried to confront them again further down the road while everyone’s still moving at high speed, which is just an insane level of commitment to being a problem.
The clip has already racked up millions of views, because of course it has, and people are watching it thinking the same thing, what is wrong with people?
Police did take a report, but as of now, no arrests have been announced, which somehow makes it even more frustrating.
