It was a moment that left boxing fans both stunned and bewildered.
In extraordinary scenes at The O2 Arena on April 4, Deontay Wilder was caught on camera whispering an emotional message to opponent Derek Chisora, seconds before unleashing a brutal attack that sent the British fighter tumbling through the ropes.
The now-viral clip, taken during Round 8 of the heavyweight showdown, appears to show Wilder leaning in and telling Chisora, “I’m sorry… I love you,” in a moment that has since sparked widespread reaction online.
But any sense of tenderness was fleeting.
Almost immediately after the remark, Wilder launched a fierce barrage of punches, overwhelming Chisora and forcing him backward in dramatic fashion, before the veteran was knocked out of the ring ropes to gasps from the crowd.
The shocking sequence quickly became the defining image of the fight, which ultimately went the full 12 rounds.
Despite scoring two knockdowns, Wilder was unable to secure a knockout victory, instead winning by split decision, with judges scoring the bout 115-111, 115-113, and 112-115.
For Chisora, the night carried added significance, marking what has been billed as the final fight of his long and punishing career.
While the result did not go his way, the 25-year-old’s resilience was on full display as he recovered from the heavy blows and continued to battle until the final bell.
