A teenager’s first night out to celebrate her 18th birthday turned into a terrifying ordeal after she says she was left temporarily paralyzed within seconds of accepting a drink from a stranger at a nightclub in Southend.
Millie Taplin had been heading into MooMoo nightclub in Southend-on-Sea when a man approached her and offered what he described as a “vodka lemonade,” encouraging her to try it.
She took a sip.
Within seconds, she says, her body began to shut down.
Her face reportedly went numb, her fingers curled into painful, claw-like spasms, and her entire body stiffened as if locked in place. Despite remaining fully conscious, she was unable to move, trapped inside her own body as panic set in.
The horrifying aftermath was captured in hospital footage later shared by her mother, showing Millie’s hands contorted and her body rigid as she struggled through the episode. Doctors treating her suspected she may have been given two unidentified substances, one acting as a paralyzing agent and the other as a sedative intended to render her unconscious.
For around four hours, Millie remained immobilized before gradually regaining movement. By the following day, she had physically recovered, but the shock of the experience has left a lasting impact.
Crucially, medical tests failed to detect any substances in her system, leaving authorities unable to confirm exactly what she had been given and raising further concern about the types of drugs potentially being used in drink-spiking incidents.
Her mother has since released the footage as a stark warning to others, urging young people to never accept drinks from strangers, particularly in busy nightlife environments.
The incident at MooMoo nightclub has reignited fears over drink spiking, a threat that continues to plague clubs and bars across the United Kingdom and beyond.
What should have been a milestone celebration quickly became a chilling reminder of how dangerous a single moment can be, and how a night meant for celebration can turn into a medical emergency in an instant.
