Terrifying security camera footage captured the moment a runaway truck barreled out of control down a steep mountain road in Brazil before smashing into multiple vehicles and crashing into a church, killing three people and injuring several others.
The devastating crash happened on May 14 along the RJ-150 highway in Nova Friburgo, in the Amparo district of Rio de Janeiro state.
Video from nearby security cameras shows the heavily loaded truck racing downhill at high speed through the Parada Folly area after reportedly suffering brake failure on the winding road.
Within seconds, the truck plows violently into several vehicles before crashing into an evangelical church at the side of the road, sending debris and dust exploding into the air.
The impact was so severe that a massive cloud of smoke and rubble engulfed the scene as bystanders scrambled in panic.
Authorities said the runaway truck struck three cars and a female pedestrian before slamming into the church building.
Three elderly occupants inside one of the vehicles were killed in the crash, according to local reports.
Four other people were injured, including the truck driver, identified as Luciano Ignácio Chaves.
Reports said Chaves and two assistants traveling with him managed to jump from the truck before the final impact.
The security footage has shocked viewers online because of the speed and apparent helplessness of the situation. In the video, the truck can be seen flying around the curved downhill section of road before colliding with vehicles in what appears to be a completely uncontrollable descent.
Several clips also show the immediate aftermath, with damaged vehicles scattered across the road while residents and emergency responders rush toward the wreckage.
The RJ-150 route, which cuts through mountainous terrain in the Nova Friburgo region, is known for its steep grades and dangerous curves.
