SHELBY, N.C. — A Shelby police officer was fired Saturday after doorbell camera footage captured him repeatedly striking a woman during a struggle to take her into custody amid an investigation into breaking and entering.

The incident occurred on Friday morning as officers responded to reports of suspicious activity near apartment buildings. According to authorities, 34-year-old Cherrie Moore was taken into custody and initially faced charges of breaking and entering, resisting arrest, and assault on a law enforcement officer.

Video circulating on social media shows Officer Karson Hyder taking Moore to the ground and striking her multiple times while attempting to handcuff her. A second officer, who is Black, intervenes, saying "I got her" as he assists in gaining control. Moore can be heard yelling that she does not have a warrant and mentioning mental health concerns and medication.

Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser called the use of force "disturbing and inappropriate," placed Hyder on administrative leave immediately, and confirmed his termination following an internal review. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is also examining the case.

Moore, described by family as weighing between 90 and 120 pounds and dealing with mental health issues, was released from jail with her bond reduced to zero and initial charges dropped. Family members have demanded criminal charges against the former officer, held a protest in downtown Shelby, and shared photos of her injuries, including claims of a broken nose.
