A dedicated Arkansas weatherman refused to abandon his post, even as smoke filled the studio and flames shot from a light behind him.
Noah Simmons, meteorologist for KFSM-TV’s 5NEWS in Johnson, Arkansas, was in the middle of tracking two active tornado warnings Saturday night when chaos broke out on set.
Viewers watched in disbelief as Simmons, solo at the weather desk, suddenly pulled his shirt over his face like a bandana while radar graphics flashed warnings for Greenwood, Barling, and Pocola. A studio light had caught fire, sending smoke billowing across the broadcast.
“We just had a fire in the studio, but we’ve got two tornado warnings, so we’ve got to keep tracking this and covering this live,” Simmons calmly told viewers, never missing a beat on the storm threats.
His quick thinking paid off. A producer rushed in with a fire extinguisher and doused the blaze. No one was hurt, though Simmons later noted some of the haze came from the extinguisher fumes themselves.
The young University of Missouri grad’s heroics came as severe weather hammered the region. Three EF-1 tornadoes were later confirmed, causing only minor damage.
In an era of nonstop doomscrolling and panic, Simmons proved old-school professionalism isn’t dead: When Mother Nature and a studio inferno collide, the show, and the warnings must go on.
