Video of the jaw-dropping incident at the LVM Saarland Trofeo Juniors, a UCI Junior Nations’ Cup event, has gone viral, racking up hundreds of thousands of views and sparking outrage online. The clip shows the peloton of teen and young adult racers barreling down the road in Habkirchen when the older woman, apparently hunting for a better view, edges her scooter right into their path.
One rider, 17-year-old Dutch junior Paul Vriesman, had zero chance to swerve. He clipped the scooter, triggering a horrifying multi-bike pile-up that left racers sprawled across the asphalt and sidewalk, wheels spinning and equipment scattered everywhere. Bystanders stood around with beers in hand, some filming on their phones as injured kids writhed in pain. One rider in an orange-and-blue kit lay motionless on the pavement near a brick sidewalk while others scrambled to their feet.
Miraculously, reports indicate no life-threatening injuries, though several riders were clearly hurting, and their months of grueling training went up in smoke. Vriesman later posted on Instagram, expressing relief mixed with frustration over the needless setback. The Dutch squad still managed a strong showing overall, with Liam Brugman taking a stage win and Norway’s Sindre Orholm-Lønseth claiming the general classification.
