GREENVILLE, N.C. — A compassionate stranger stepped in to protect a terrified 5-year-old boy who was found wandering a North Carolina road late at night with no shoes, no pants, and crying out for his mother.
The incident unfolded around 10 p.m. Monday near East Fire Tower Road in Greenville, close to Covenant Church. Antwain Daniels discovered the young child alone and immediately sprang into action.
Daniels called 911, then lifted the boy onto his back so his bare feet wouldn’t touch the cold ground. He wrapped the child in a blanket and gave him the shoes off his own feet. The boy could be heard on video pleading for his mother as the stranger cared for him.“It was like a movie,” Daniels told local reporters. “I’ve seen nothing like that in reality.” He added, “I just thank God I was there for him.”
An 18-minute video of the encounter, which appears to have originated from Daniels’ own recording, has spread widely across social media. Viewers can clearly hear the child’s heartbreaking cries for his mom while Daniels provides comfort and protection in those critical moments.
Greenville police responded to the scene. Officers placed the boy in the front seat of a patrol car and returned him to his apartment. Authorities determined that the child’s 36-year-old mother, Camille Banks, had left the apartment. The boy had apparently wandered out in search of her.
Banks was cited for misdemeanor child abuse. The child was returned to the home.
Daniels, reflecting on his own upbringing, said helping the boy came naturally: “Just growing up, you know, without shoes, without the clothes on my back… that’s just who I am.
”The story has sparked widespread discussion online, with many praising Daniels as a hero for his quick thinking and genuine compassion. The footage shows a complete stranger stepping up in a way that many say the child’s own mother failed to do.
“A complete stranger protected him better in five minutes than the people who were supposed to,” one widely shared description of the video noted.
Questions have been raised about why the charge against the mother was only a misdemeanor and why the child was returned to the same home. Critics argue the situation could have ended far worse had Daniels or another responsible adult not intervened.
For now, attention has turned to the man who chose to act. Daniels has been hailed for his instinctive kindness and for turning what could have been a tragedy into a story of hope and human decency.
“I just thank God I was there for him,” Daniels repeated. In a world where too many look the other way, one man chose to stop, help, and protect a vulnerable child.
The video continues to circulate, reminding viewers of both the dangers of neglect and the power of one person doing the right thing.
