Horrific scenes have emerged from Barcelona showing a large-scale brawl involving machetes erupting on a packed beach during the traditional San Juan celebrations.
The disturbing footage, filmed in the early hours of June 24 at Playa de la Mar Bella, captures dozens of people scuffling in the sand as one man brandishes a large blade and chases others amid the chaos. Beachgoers can be seen scattering in panic while the fight rages on in broad view of the public.
The video, which has gone viral on social media, was shared with the caption: “Believe it or not, this is Barcelona. Just a bunch of Colombians having a machete fight on a packed beach.
WTH has happened to Europe?”
According to local reports, the clash left one man with a serious cut to his back after being struck with a white weapon. He was rushed to the hospital but his injuries were later downgraded and he is not believed to be in life-threatening danger. Police detained at least one suspect in connection with the attack.
The incident occurred as around 90,000 people gathered along Barcelona’s coastline for the annual verbena de Sant Joan, a night of bonfires, fireworks, music, and partying that traditionally marks the summer solstice. While authorities described the overall night as “intensa pero relativamente tranquila,” the machete brawl stood out as one of the most serious incidents.
In the video, the beach appears crowded even in the early morning light. Groups of young men are seen pushing, punching, and wrestling in the sand. One individual is clearly holding what appears to be a machete or large knife, swinging it as he pursues others. People are filmed running for safety, some climbing over walls or barriers to escape the melee, while others stand and film the unfolding drama.
Witnesses suggested the fight may have started after a group destroyed a music tent on the beach.
The Guardia Urbana confirmed the use of a bladed weapon and said the victim suffered an open wound but was stabilised after medical treatment. Overall, 11 people were arrested across the city during the celebrations, with dozens more requiring medical attention — many for alcohol-related issues.
‘What has happened to Europe?’
The footage has ignited furious debate online, with many expressing shock that such violence could unfold on a public beach in a major European tourist city.
Barcelona has long struggled with petty crime and pickpocketing that plagues tourists, but incidents involving machetes and serious violence have become increasingly visible in recent years.
Local media reported that the verbena this year saw the usual mix of revelry and trouble, but the image of men fighting with machetes on a crowded beach has left many asking serious questions about public safety and integration.
Police have yet to release details on the nationalities or backgrounds of those involved in the specific brawl, though the widely shared video has been accompanied by claims they were Colombians.
As Barcelona clears up tonnes of rubbish left behind by the massive crowds, the shocking images from Mar Bella beach serve as a stark reminder that even traditional celebrations are not immune to the rising tide of violence gripping parts of Europe.
