A heart-stopping moment of real-life courage has once again gripped the internet after harrowing footage from Almaty International Airport in Kazakhstan resurfaced this week.
On March 7, 2025, panic erupted at the domestic terminal security checkpoint when 67-year-old Mashrapbek Baratov pulled a kitchen knife, grabbed a young female security officer by her hair, and held the blade to her face while screaming threats. He also claimed he had a bomb in his bag that he could detonate with his phone, sending shockwaves through the terminal.
As terrified passengers and staff watched helplessly, one ordinary bystander stepped forward with extraordinary bravery.
Musa Abdraim, a 52-year-old former boxing champion and father of five who was at the airport seeing off a friend, calmly approached the attacker and offered to take the young woman's place as a hostage. In a line that has since moved millions, he reportedly said something to the effect of "It's my turn", and the knifeman agreed to the swap.
Once the terrified 21-year-old security officer (named in reports as Botagoz Mukhtarova) was released, Abdraim seized his moment. In a split-second lunge captured on shocking video, he grabbed the knife bare-handed from the attacker's grip, disarmed him, and helped wrestle the suspect to the ground until police and security arrived.
The entire terrifying standoff lasted around seven minutes. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured.
Baratov was arrested on the spot. He later pleaded guilty to charges including hostage-taking, hooliganism with a weapon, and making a false report of a terrorist act. In July 2025, he was sentenced to 11 years in a medium-security prison.
Abdraim, hailed as a national hero, was awarded Kazakhstan’s prestigious “Yerligi Ushin” (For Bravery) state medal by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The World Boxing Council also honoured him as a “Hero of Humanity.”
In an interview after the incident, the modest hero revealed his only thought was protecting the young woman: “I was afraid he would stab her.”
The dramatic video, showing the attacker gripping the woman, the tense negotiations, and Abdraim’s decisive intervention, has been shared widely online. A recent post highlighting the emotional “It’s my turn” moment has racked up thousands of views and emotional reactions, with viewers calling it “real courage” and praising it as a rare example of someone putting others first in a crisis.
