A young outdoorsman captured a terrifyingly close encounter with a bear in the woods that left him and viewers on edge, after the animal locked onto his dog and closed the distance in dense brush.
The footage, shared Saturday by the popular outdoor brand MeatEater on X, shows Max Brooke navigating a forested area when a young bear appears and begins moving purposefully toward him and his canine companion. Shaky handheld video captures the bear weaving through thick green vegetation and fallen logs, clearly fixated on the dog as the pair move along a dirt path with mountains visible in the distance.
In the roughly 72-second video, the bear can be seen standing and then advancing through the undergrowth. The camera work turns frantic at points as Brooke reacts, ending with a close-up of the hike, backpack on, glasses in place, looking winded and stunned under a partly cloudy sky, while the dog remains nearby on the trail.
Viewers quickly noted the dangerous dynamic. “Young bear fixated on the dog. Dogs and bears are natural enemies. Could have really gotten ugly with an older bear,” one commenter wrote. Others issued blunt public service announcements: “Do not go in the woods without bear spray or a gun.”Another observer highlighted the fine line in such moments: “There’s a coolness factor in filming these kinds of encounters. There’s also an idiocy factor in it too. Where those lines are, is hard to tell.”
Wildlife experts and outdoor veterans have long warned that dogs can provoke defensive or predatory responses from bears, as the animals often view canines as competitors or threats. Black bears, in particular, may approach out of curiosity or territorial instinct, and what starts as interest can escalate rapidly if the animal feels cornered or if a dog barks and lunges.
