GASTONIA, N.C. — A tough-as-nails 74-year-old homeowner living alone with health problems just taught a career criminal a painful lesson about picking the wrong house.
Early on the morning of July 12, around 7:13 a.m., Cedric Ford, 57, showed up at Donald Bolynn’s Ware Avenue home and started banging on the door before moving over to pry at a window in broad daylight. Bolynn, who has hearing loss and other medical issues and has already been targeted by burglars in recent weeks, heard the racket, got up from the couch, and checked the front door. Nothing. Then he looked toward the window.
“That’s when I got my gun and shot,” Bolynn told local reporters. One round through the glass. Straight into Ford’s chest.
Ford staggered back to a waiting car with his girlfriend, Sanja Stallings, 47, and the pair drove a short distance to a QuikTrip gas station. There, the wounded would-be burglar dialed 911 and spun a story about some mysterious drive-by shooter in a white car who supposedly plugged him near an intersection. Nice try.
Gastonia police weren’t buying it. Their Flock gunshot detection sensors and the homeowner’s own Ring and surveillance cameras told the real story in high definition: Ford was the one trying to force his way into an elderly man’s house.
Detectives connected the pair to previous robberies at the same address. Both are now charged with first-degree burglary and obstruction of justice. Bolynn faces zero charges. Classic self-defense.
This is what happens when a vulnerable senior refuses to be an easy mark. Bolynn isn’t some gun-toting cowboy. He’s a disabled older man living alone who simply decided he wasn’t going to roll over while a thug tried to invade his home. Criminals bank on soft targets and soft gun laws. This time the soft target was armed, and the cameras were rolling.
Ford and Stallings thought they could shoot their way into a free medical ride and a sob story. Instead they got caught red-handed by technology and a senior who still knows how to protect what’s his. One shot. One clear message.
In a country where career criminals keep testing the limits, this elderly North Carolinian just reminded everyone why the Second Amendment exists. Law-abiding people, especially the elderly and the vulnerable, have every right to fight back. And when they do, the bad guys don’t get to rewrite the narrative with a 911 call.
Respect to Donald Bolynn. He didn’t start the fight. He finished it.
